Viasat is a U.S.-based satellite communications company founded in May 1986 to supply defence communications equipment. It solves the problem of secure, mobile, beyond-line-of-sight comms for military and government users—and later extended that capability to aviation, maritime and consumer broadband.
How it works
Viasat builds and operates satellite networks across Ka-, L- and S-bands. It supplements its own capacity with leased bandwidth from partner satellite networks. It sells connectivity and communications equipment directly to aviation, maritime, enterprise, consumer, military and government customers.
What works
Its two-segment structure—Communication Services and Defense and Advanced Technologies—allows cross-subsidy between commercial revenue and classified contracts. Its multi-band satellite operations (Ka-, L-, S-) enable differentiated service tiers: high-throughput Ka for broadband, lower-band L/S for resilient narrowband.
What does not
Viasat does not operate a unified global satellite constellation. Its services rely on a mix of owned and leased capacity, creating dependency on third-party infrastructure. It has suffered at least two confirmed cybersecurity incidents—in February 2022 and June 2025—exposing service fragility.
What it changes
Viasat shifts satellite connectivity from bespoke defence hardware toward integrated commercial–military broadband delivery. Its acquisitions—from Scientific Atlanta to Inmarsat—consolidate fragmented satellite networking capabilities under one balance sheet, but do not eliminate reliance on external spectrum or ground infrastructure.
