It exists because undersea cables were incomplete, national telecom monopolies blocked direct links, and global broadcasting required synchronous coverage.
How it works
Intelsat operates a fleet of geostationary communications satellites to relay voice, data, and broadcast signals across national borders. It leases transponder capacity to telecoms, broadcasters, and governments. Its satellites sit in fixed orbital slots, enabling point-to-point and broadcast links without terrestrial infrastructure.
What works
Its 52-satellite fleet (as of June 2022) delivers stable, high-power C- and Ku-band coverage over oceans and remote regions. Its GEO software-defined satellites—two with Airbus, two with Thales Alenia Space—enable in-orbit reconfiguration of beams and frequencies, unlike earlier fixed-payload designs.
What does not
Its C-band 5G acceleration promise does not deliver spectrum agility. The seven C-band satellites are fixed-frequency, not dynamically reconfigurable. They cannot adapt to shifting regional demand or interference conditions.
What it changes
It shifts satellite service from intergovernmental coordination to commercial leasing—replacing treaty-based access with contract-based capacity. That enables faster procurement but ties users to long-term commitments and legacy orbital positions.
Is it worth your time
Yes—if your work depends on reliable, low-latency international connectivity where fibre is unavailable or politically constrained. No—if you need scalable, on-demand bandwidth; its hardware-defined architecture limits flexibility and responsiveness.
