What it is and the problem it solves

ISO 216 is a paper sizing standard. It solves inconsistent scaling and incompatible formats across borders and printing systems.

How it works

ISO 216 defines paper sizes using a √2 aspect ratio. Each size halves the area of the next larger size in its series. A0 is exactly 1 m². Tolerances vary by dimension: ±1.5 mm up to 150 mm, ±2 mm from 150 mm to 600 mm, and ±3 mm above 600 mm.

What works

The √2 ratio ensures halving always preserves proportions. A4 fits two A5s, four A6s, and so on—without rotation or white space. This works for copying, folding, and nesting across all sizes.

What does not

It does not unify paper usage in the US and Canada. Those countries retain ANSI inch-based formats. ISO 216 does not govern envelope flap angles, binding margins, or digital rendering defaults.

What it changes

It replaces ad hoc national sizing with a single scalable system. It enables one template to scale cleanly across A0 to A10 without cropping or stretching. It makes international document exchange predictable.
