What it is and the problem it solves

Magnetic tape is a plastic film strip coated with magnetisable material. It solved the problem of affordable, editable, high-fidelity audio recording.

How it works

It stores data by magnetising particles in a thin coating on plastic film. A recording head applies a varying magnetic field to align domains in the coating. Playback reads those alignments as electrical signals.

What works

It records and plays back sound reliably for up to two decades. It supports editing via physical splicing. It enabled multitrack recording and studio post-production.

What does not

It does not preserve reliably beyond 20 years. It fails silently: sticky-shed syndrome renders tapes unplayable without intervention. It was never archival-grade.

What it changes

It enabled portable, reusable, high-fidelity sound recording — shifting broadcast, music production, and early computing from wire, disc, and punch card to linear magnetic media.
