What works
The cellular network concept worked: it enabled scalable mobile voice coverage where earlier mobile radio systems could not. Japan’s 1979 NTT network, Sweden’s 1981 NMT, and the US’s 1983 AMPS launch all proved operational viability.
What does not
Voice transmission between handset and base station remained analog using frequency modulation. It offered no encryption, no text messaging, and no interoperability across national standards.

1G established the foundational cellular architecture — cell-based topology, frequency reuse, and mobile switching — that all subsequent generations inherited and built upon.
Is it worth your time
No. 1G is obsolete infrastructure — analog, insecure, and replaced by digital networks by the early 1990s. It matters only as a historical baseline for understanding cellular evolution.
