1G wasn’t the dawn of mobile—it was the last gasp of analog radio dressed as a network.

1G was the first set of analog mobile standards built on cellular architecture. It delivered mobile voice over fragmented national systems—AMPS, NMT, TACS—but offered no security, no data, and no cross-border compatibility.
