Rocket Lab is a publicly traded aerospace manufacturer and launch provider founded in 2006 in New Zealand. It solves the problem of fragmented, inflexible access to orbit for small satellites by offering dedicated, frequent, and vertically integrated launch and spacecraft services.
How it works
Rocket Lab builds and launches small rockets, makes satellite components, and assembles full spacecraft. It operates across New Zealand, the US, and Europe. Its Electron rocket is expendable. HASTE is a suborbital testbed for hypersonic tech. Neutron is a reusable medium-lift vehicle under development.
What works
Electron has completed over 75 missions as of January 2026. It is the most prolific small-lift vehicle in operation globally. Rocket Lab became the first private Southern Hemisphere company to reach space in 2009 with Ātea-1. It supplies flight-proven satellite components and buses, and manufactures complete spacecraft.
What does not
Neutron is not operational. Electron is not reusable. HASTE has not flown to orbit. Rocket Lab does not operate a global ground network or offer on-orbit servicing.
What it changes
It shifts small-sat launch from bespoke government contracts to repeatable, high-frequency commercial service. It expands supply-chain control by manufacturing star trackers, reaction wheels, solar panels, electric propulsion, radios, composites, separation systems, and EO/IR sensors in-house.
Is it worth your time
Yes—if you need reliable small-sat launch access or integrated satellite hardware. Its vertical integration reduces vendor coordination but does not yet include reusability at scale.
