SES is a Luxembourg-based satellite communications operator founded in 1985 to build private satellite infrastructure for Europe. It solves fragmented, state-controlled broadcast access by providing commercial, scalable, orbital real estate and transmission services.
How it works
SES operates a multi-orbit satellite fleet: over 70 satellites in geostationary and medium Earth orbits. It pioneered co-location—placing multiple satellites at the same orbital slot—to enable mutual backup and increase channel capacity for fixed-dish receivers. It also pioneered digital satellite transmission in 1996 with Canal+.
What works
Co-location works: it created the Astra ‘satellite neighbourhood’ at 19.2° East, enabling 14 million cable and DTH viewers by 1990. Digital transmission works: SES launched it commercially with Canal+ in 1996. The Intelsat acquisition works: it closed on 17 July 2025 after regulatory approval.
What does not
The material does not establish that SES’s MEO constellation delivers lower latency than GEO, nor that its multi-orbit integration is seamless in practice.
