What it is and the problem it solves
AltaVista was the first full-text/boolean searchable index of the World Wide Web. It solved the problem of finding specific words anywhere on known web pages — not whether those pages mattered.
How it works
AltaVista used the multi-threaded web crawler Scooter to index pages at unprecedented speed. It stored that index in TurboVista, an efficient backend database running on advanced hardware. It implemented the first CAPTCHA to block automated page submissions.
What works
Scooter crawled faster than any predecessor. TurboVista served queries efficiently. The CAPTCHA blocked bot-driven index spam. Traffic soared: over 80 million hits per day by 1997.
What does not
It did not rank results meaningfully. It returned matches but offered no signal of authority, freshness, or usefulness. Its boolean interface required technical skill and gave no guidance for non-expert users.
What it changes
It changed expectations of what a search engine could cover: full-text, real-time, and massive-scale indexing became table stakes. It proved the web could be exhaustively crawled and queried — but not intelligently ordered.
Is it worth your time
No — AltaVista was overtaken by Google’s PageRank and never solved ranking relevance. Its dominance was brief, its architecture not extensible, and its user-facing innovation limited to scale and speed.
