Radio broadcasting was not invented in 1895—it was reverse-engineered from telegraphy, then rebuilt twice before it worked at all.
Radio broadcasting did not exist in 1895. Its foundational audio transmissions began in 1906. Its first scheduled, repeatable, commercial services appeared in 1919–1920. Its regulatory definition arrived in 1921. The gap between ‘demonstration’ and ‘service’ was fourteen years—and it was bridged not by invention, but by regulation, licensing, and infrastructure investment.
Fessenden’s 1906 alternator demonstration was the first working audio broadcast—but it was a one-off lab experiment, not a service.

What it is and the problem it solves
Radio broadcasting is the transmission of audio to multiple uncoordinated receivers. It solves the problem of mass audio dissemination without wires or physical media.
How it works
Radio broadcasting transmits audio wirelessly using electromagnetic waves modulated by amplitude or frequency. Early systems used alternator, arc, and spark transmitters; vacuum tubes later enabled stable, high-fidelity audio transmission.
What works
Fessenden’s 1906 alternator transmitter carried intelligible voice and music over distance. Idzerda’s PCGG (1919) and Radio Argentina (1920) delivered scheduled, repeated programming. KDKA’s 1920 election broadcast proved commercial licensing could anchor regular operation.
What does not
It does not broadcast reliably before 1920. Alternator transmitters (1906) were lab-bound and single-use. Spark and arc systems produced noisy, narrow-band signals unfit for music or speech. No licensed, scheduled, repeatable service existed before November 1919.
