What works
Multi-sensor fusion works reliably in geofenced environments. Komatsu’s 2007 fleet in Gabriela Mistral mine worked. AMAS completed 55,000+ hours at up to 64 km/h by 2014. Kodiak’s December 2024 launch delivered driverless freight on private lease roads.
What does not
Driverless operation on public roads does not exist outside private lease roads. No company has conducted driverless commercial haulage on open U.S. or EU highways. The self-imposed safety bar remains unmet for mixed-traffic deployment.

It changes the boundary of acceptable operational autonomy: Kodiak’s December 2024 launch on private lease roads redefines where ‘commercial’ begins—not on interstate highways, but on controlled-access industrial corridors.
Is it worth your time
Yes—if you work in logistics, transport regulation, or AI safety. It is not yet a production-ready replacement for human drivers on public roads, but its constrained commercial launch signals a shift in operational risk tolerance.
