How it works
Chromebooks run ChromeOS, a proprietary OS built on the Linux kernel but without default GNU compatibility. They boot using Coreboot (except the first three models). Since May 2016, they support Android apps via Google Play. Since 2021, they receive 10 years of automatic security updates.
What works
Web access is fast and consistent. Android app support works where implemented. Progressive web apps can function offline. Automatic security updates reduce admin burden. Market share hit 10.8% in 2020—surpassing Mac—driven by education adoption.
What does not
ChromeOS does not provide default support for GNU-based applications. It cannot run Windows or macOS software natively. Its offline capability depends entirely on progressive web app implementation—not system-level resilience.
What it changes
It shifts device ownership from users to Google: updates, app distribution, and security policy are centrally enforced. It redefines ‘laptop’ as a thin client with fixed lifecycle boundaries—10 years, not indefinite.
Is it worth your time
Yes—if your work is web-native, education-adjacent, or constrained by budget and maintenance overhead. No—if you rely on native desktop software, offline GNU/Linux toolchains, or long-term hardware control.
