Juniper Networks was founded in February 1996 in Sunnyvale, California, by Pradeep Sindhu to build routers optimised for packet switching — not circuit emulation. Its first product, Junos OS, launched on 1 July 1998. The M40 core router followed in September 1998, delivering ten times the throughput of comparable contemporary Cisco routers using ASICs co-developed with IBM.
