Portability came at ten hours charging for thirty minutes talking — and that was the revolution.
The DynaTAC 8000X was the first commercially available handheld cellular phone. It weighed 28 oz, stood 10 inches high without its antenna, took 10 hours to charge, delivered 30 minutes of talk time, stored 30 numbers, and ran on AMPS using MOS tech from ALOHAnet. It was revolutionary only relative to vehicle- or briefcase-mounted predecessors.
The DynaTAC is the first commercially available handheld cellular phone. It solves the problem of location-bound voice communication by enabling portable, direct-dial access to the cellular network.
How it works
It used MOS transceiver and modem technology derived from ALOHAnet. It operated on the AMPS standard. It required a full 10-hour charge for 30 minutes of talk time.
What works
It enables dialing and recall of 30 numbers via LED display. It achieves FCC approval and commercial production. It functions as a self-contained, battery-powered cellular terminal.
