Personal digital assistant

PDAs were not the dawn of mobile computing — they were its last gasp before smartphones made them irrelevant.

PDAs were portable personal information managers. They digitised address books, calendars and notes. They boomed in the 1990s and 2000s. They were displaced in the early 2010s by smartphones and tablets. The first was the Psion Organiser in 1984. The term 'PDA' was coined by John Sculley on 7 January 1992. IBM Simon (1994) and Nokia 9000 Communicator (1996) added telephony. Palm led until Pocket PC rose in the early 2000s. By the mid-2000s, non-cellular PDAs were increasingly uncommon.

What it is and the problem it solves

A PDA is a multi-purpose mobile device functioning as a personal information manager. It solved the problem of carrying paper address books, diaries and to-do lists by digitising them into a single handheld unit.

How it works

A PDA runs a lightweight operating system on low-power hardware. It synchronises contact, calendar and note data with desktop software via serial cable or infrared. Input is via stylus on a monochrome touchscreen or physical keyboard.

What works

Synchronisation with desktop PCs worked reliably. Contact and calendar data transferred cleanly. Stylus-based note-taking was legible when users wrote slowly and clearly. Battery life exceeded two weeks on alkaline cells.

What does not

PDAs do not support multitasking, third-party app ecosystems, or wireless internet. They cannot run modern web browsers, email clients or cloud services. Their handwriting recognition was unreliable and required training.

What it changes

PDAs established that mobile personal information management could be centralised in a pocket-sized device. They proved demand for portable, synchronised digital records — but only as a transitional step to always-connected computing.

Is it worth your time

No. PDAs are obsolete. Their core functions were absorbed into smartphones by the mid-2000s. Maintaining one requires legacy cables, drivers and software no longer supported.
