How it works
Western Digital began as a semiconductor and test equipment maker in 1970, using MOS technology to build logic test gear. It rebranded in mid-1971 and launched the WD1402A UART — a universal asynchronous receiver-transmitter chip that converted parallel data to serial for communication with modems and terminals.
What works
The WD1402A UART worked reliably in teletype and terminal systems. The FD1771 worked as a floppy controller across early CP/M and DOS machines. Its Malaysian plant (1973) worked as a semiconductor fabrication site — enabling cost-effective scale before storage became its focus.
What does not
It did not enter data storage until 1976 — six years after founding — and had no hard disk drives, no mass-market storage products, and no ATA interface until later. The 1976 FD1771 was a floppy disk controller, not a drive; it controlled external media, required companion chips, and offered no built-in error correction or caching.
What it changes
It changed how PCs interfaced with storage: by supplying IBM PC/AT controllers in 1983 and co-developing ATA starting in 1986, Western Digital helped standardise direct-attached storage at the chipset level — shifting control from mainframe-style subsystems to commodity motherboard interfaces.
Is it worth your time
