What it is and the problem it solves
A netbook is a small, lightweight, low-cost laptop designed primarily for internet access. It solved the problem of affordable, portable web connectivity for students, secondary users, and emerging markets.
How it works
Netbooks used low-power processors, solid-state storage instead of hard drives, and stripped-out hardware—no optical drive, minimal RAM, small screens (5–12 inches), light weight (~1 kg). They ran Linux by default, then Windows XP after Microsoft extended licensing, then Windows 7 Starter Edition after XP licensing ended.
What works
The combination of solid-state storage, sub-1kg weight, and sub-£300 pricing worked for basic web tasks. Linux boot times were fast. The form factor enabled new usage patterns: carry-anywhere browsing, classroom deployment, travel backup.
What does not
They did not sustain differentiation. Increasing specs to run Windows 7 Starter eroded their defining trade-offs. They failed to establish a durable category or software ecosystem. Their value proposition collapsed when the gap between ‘netbook’ and ‘laptop’ narrowed to zero.
What it changes
Netbooks proved that users would accept severe hardware compromises for portability and price—but only until better alternatives arrived. They accelerated adoption of solid-state storage and exposed how tightly OS licensing controlled hardware segmentation.
Is it worth your time
Not for current work. Netbooks were a temporary category defined by cost and constraint—not capability—and vanished by end-2012 as their specs converged with mainstream laptops and their purpose was absorbed by tablets and ultraportables.
