Seagate Technology is an Irish-domiciled data storage company incorporated in 1978 as Shugart Technology and commencing operations in 1979. Its first product—the 5 MB ST-506—was the first 5.25-inch hard disk drive, released in 1980 using MFM encoding. It fit the same form factor as the Shugart mini-floppy drive. This enabled Seagate to secure a major OEM contract with IBM for the IBM XT, the first IBM personal computer to include a hard disk.
