What it is and the problem it solves
The IBM Personal Computer XT is the second model in IBM’s PC line, released on March 8, 1983. It solves the problem of slow, fragile, and cumbersome floppy-based workflows by adding built-in hard storage and more expansion room.
How it works
The XT uses the same 8088 CPU and architecture as the original PC, but adds a 10 MB hard drive controlled by a Xebec disk controller, eight expansion slots instead of five, 128 KB of base RAM, and larger 32 KB ROM chips replacing five 8 KB ones. It boots PC DOS 2.0 and omits the cassette interface.
What works
The eight-slot motherboard works reliably with existing PC peripherals. The Xebec controller delivers stable access to the 10 MB drive under PC DOS 2.0. The increased RAM and consolidated ROM improve boot consistency and reduce hardware conflicts.
What does not
It does not solve portability, noise, or thermal management. It does not increase processing speed, graphics capability, or memory bandwidth over the original PC. The hard drive is non-removable, vendor-locked, and offers no backup mechanism beyond floppy duplication.
What it changes
It changes enterprise PC deployment by making local storage standard—not optional. It establishes the hard drive as a baseline expectation for business machines, shifting software installation and data persistence from floppies to fixed disk.
Is it worth your time
Yes—if you need local storage and expansion headroom in 1983, and can absorb the cost and power draw of a fixed 10 MB drive with no removable media option. Otherwise, the original PC remains functionally identical for most tasks.
