The hardware design worked: Andy Bechtolsheim delivered a functional 3M system. ECAD enabled rapid iteration. Multibus allowed expansion. VLSI made it affordable.

It did not scale beyond the lab. Stanford stopped production after ten units. It was not a product — it was a prototype with no path to deployment.
