Telesat is a Canadian satellite operator founded as a Crown corporation to solve national connectivity gaps in remote and northern regions. It solved the problem of delivering broadcast television and long-distance telephony where terrestrial lines were impractical or uneconomical.
How it works
Telesat operates geostationary communications satellites. It uses spot beams to target signal coverage. Its satellites orbit at fixed positions above the equator. This enables continuous, stable links for television, data, and voice across Canada.
What works
Anik A1 worked: it delivered the world’s first domestic geostationary communications service in 1972. The SS/L1300 platform used in Nimiq 6 delivers 15-year orbital reliability. Spot beam technology enabled focused regional coverage—essential for Canada’s dispersed population.
What does not
Telesat did not establish open access or competitive satellite services in Canada. Its legal monopoly on Earth stations until 1979 blocked third-party infrastructure development. Its geostationary model does not support low-latency applications. It does not operate in low Earth orbit.
What it changes
Telesat changed how sovereign nations deploy domestic satellite infrastructure. It proved a national carrier could launch and manage its own geostationary fleet without relying on Intelsat. It shifted regulatory control from international consortia to domestic legislation.
