What it is and the problem it solves
The spinning mule is a hybrid spinning machine invented by Samuel Crompton between 1775 and 1779. It solves the problem of producing strong, thin, uniform yarn at scale—beyond hand spinning or earlier machines’ capability.
How it works
The spinning mule operates intermittently: during the outward draw stroke, roving is paid out through rollers and twisted; on the return stroke, the roving is clamped and spindles reverse to wind the yarn. It combines Arkwright’s roller drafting with Hargreaves’s moving carriage.
What works
The rollers and outward carriage motion remove irregularities from the roving. The resulting yarn is strong and thin, suitable for both warp and weft—and specifically for muslin. Crompton’s first version produced one pound of 60s thread daily using 48 spindles.
What does not
It does not run continuously. The stop-start cycle constrains output speed and requires precise timing of clamping, winding, and carriage reversal. It cannot match the throughput of later ring or cap spinning machines.
What it changes
It changes textile economics: mule-spun 80s thread sold for 42 shillings per pound versus 14 shillings for 40s hand-spun thread. It made muslin viable at scale and shifted warp-and-weft production from hand to machine.
Is it worth your time
Yes—if you work with textile production, historical automation, or mechanical design. Its hybrid mechanism directly enabled fine-yarn mass production, but its intermittent motion limited throughput versus later continuous systems.
