The DJI Phantom is a series of entry-level GPS quadcopter UAVs launched in 2013. It solved the problem of inaccessible aerial imaging by bundling stable flight, intuitive controls, and camera integration into a single affordable unit.
How it works
The Phantom 1 used a GPS-enabled NAZA-M autopilot system to stabilise flight and hover automatically under wind resistance. It relied on 2.4 GHz radio control and a 2200 mAh LiPo battery for power. It had no built-in camera but supported optional GoPro HERO mounting.
What works
Its GPS-enabled autopilot enabled stable hovering. Its $629 price point and fully assembled design made it radically more accessible than competitors. Its user-friendly software and GoPro compatibility lowered the barrier to high-quality aerial footage.
What does not
It did not include a built-in camera until the Phantom 2 Vision. It offered no obstacle avoidance until the Phantom 4. Its 15-minute flight time, 2.4 GHz control range, and lack of redundancy limited reliability in complex environments.
What it changes
It established the modern aerial photography drone form factor: compact quadcopter, GPS-stabilised, consumer-assembled, with integrated autopilot and camera-mounting capability. It shifted drone adoption from DIY hobbyists to photographers, surveyors, and filmmakers.
Is it worth your time
No — the Phantom line was discontinued after the Phantom 4 and replaced by the Mavic series. Its hardware, software, and regulatory compliance are obsolete for current professional or recreational use.
