The Wii is a home video game console launched in November 2006. It solves the problem of market saturation among core gamers by targeting non-consumers—people who do not play video games—through intuitive motion controls, low price, and social software.
How it works
The Wii uses off-the-shelf components: an IBM Broadway CPU (PowerPC-based), MEMS accelerometers and infrared sensors in the Wii Remote, a Sensor Bar for spatial reference, and Bluetooth/802.11b/g Wi-Fi for connectivity. Motion input is triangulated via infrared detection and acceleration data; pointing relies on the Sensor Bar’s dual IR emitters. Early models accept GameCube discs and controllers via dedicated ports.
What works
Wii Sports works as a mass onboarding tool. The Wii Remote’s gesture recognition and pointing work reliably for broad physical actions. Native Wi-Fi and the Wii Shop Channel work for basic digital distribution. Backward compatibility with GameCube software works in early models. The Blue Ocean Strategy works: it sells over 101 million units by 2016—the most of its generation.
What does not
The Wii does not deliver high-definition graphics. It does not sustain complex online multiplayer at scale. It does not retain backward compatibility beyond early models. Its motion controls lack precision for fine-motor tasks. Its Wi-Fi stack (802.11b/g) is slow and insecure by modern standards.
