The escalator is not a 1891 invention. It is a sequence: untested patents (1859, 1889), a functional Reno prototype (1896), then commercial scaling (1899). Its mechanism is precise — dual tracks holding treads level — but its early use had no safety code, no standardisation, and no public infrastructure role. It changes movement, not access.
Patents ≠ prototypes: Ames (1859) and Souder (1889) filed escalator-like designs but built nothing.
