How it works
Modern roundabouts require entering traffic to yield to circulating traffic. This is enforced by road markings and horizontal deflection. The rule was introduced locally from about 1956, standardised by UK Transport Research Laboratory engineers in the early 1960s, and made mandatory for all new roundabouts in November 1966.
What works
The priority rule improves traffic flow by up to 10%. Compared to stop signs, signals, and earlier roundabouts, it reduces collision likelihood and severity by slowing vehicles and eliminating right-angle and head-on impacts.
