How it works
The Apple Watch pairs with an iPhone for setup and data syncing. It connects independently to Wi-Fi for communications, app use, and audio streaming. LTE and 5G models make and receive calls without the iPhone nearby or when it is powered off.
What works
Fitness tracking, health-oriented capabilities, wireless telecommunication, and tight integration with watchOS and other Apple services work reliably. It became the world’s best-selling wearable device immediately after its April 2015 launch.
What does not
It does not work as a standalone device outside Apple’s ecosystem. Other smartwatches lack full iPhone support because Apple restricts APIs—so interoperability is intentionally broken. It does not run without an iPhone for initial configuration or long-term sync.
