What it is and the problem it solves
The OLPC XO is a low-cost, rugged, low-power laptop designed for individual primary school children in developing countries. It solves the problem of providing durable, collaborative computing where infrastructure is weak and electricity unreliable.
How it works
The XO runs a Fedora Linux-derived OS with the Sugar GUI. It uses flash memory instead of an HDD. It was designed to operate on alternative power, including solar and human-powered generators.
What works
Flash storage avoids HDD failure in dusty, mobile, or high-vibration settings. The Sugar GUI supports constructionist learning. Successive revisions reduced power consumption, increased storage, and shifted from x86 to ARM processors.
What does not
802.11s mesh networking was abandoned due to unreliability. The built-in hand-crank generator was also abandoned. The $50 price target was never achieved; the device sold at $199 in Give One Get One campaigns.
