How it works
The IBM 350 used a single actuator arm with two read/write heads — one facing up, one down — that moved both horizontally between adjacent platters and vertically between sets of platters.
What works
It delivers random access to 3.75 MB across 100 usable surfaces — enough to store the entire US corporate payroll on a single system in 1956.
What does not
It does not scale. Its dual-head, manually aligned actuator cannot support concurrent access across surfaces. It lacks cylinder-mode operation, head flying, or modular expansion.
What it changes
It replaces sequential-access magnetic tape with random-access secondary storage — enabling real-time transaction processing on the IBM 305 RAMAC.
Is it worth your time
No. It is a foundational artifact, not a working reference for modern storage engineering or deployment.
